Is the culprit actually a thrips? And is it still feeding on the plant today? Both questions have to be settled before anyone reaches for a treatment, and the second one catches most people out.

  2. Watch the paper closely for ten seconds. Dislodged thrips move quickly and look like animated slivers.
  3. Bring a hand lens to the paper and confirm the narrow body and fringed wings.
  4. Check nearby damaged tissue and frass under the same magnification.

Thrips on Plants: Which Trees and Shrubs Are Most Affected?
